I have seen anxiety symptoms present in a variety of ways here in the clinic.
Lowering levels of sex hormones can affect your anxiety.
This explains why anxiety often peaks during times of hormonal change.
Hormonal changes include;
- Puberty,
- before during or after your period,
- perimenopause or menopause
Similarly, if your starting to feel anxious about situations you would normally sail through then it could be hormonally related.
Oestrogen helps to stimulate the production and transportation of serotonin around the body and prevents its break down.
Therefore, when estrogen levels are low serotonin is low and an unstable mood and anxiety can develop. The balance and interaction of hormones, particularly testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone can cause different signs and symptoms in different people
The other cause I see present frequently is a worn-out syndrome.
Have you been doing too much for too long without any self-care?
Are you surviving on adrenaline, coffee, alcohol and sugar and very little sleep?
I understand that we all fall into this trap from time to time, so these symptoms can also be viewed as a much-needed reminder to get our health back on track.
Stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol are released from your adrenals gland (situated on top of your kidneys) where you feel threatened, stressed or overwhelmed. Stress hormones are there to protect us. To produce enough energy for our Flight/Fight/Freeze response to danger
Your body assesses all stress as serious. When you feel stressed adrenaline and cortisol are released from your adrenals gland (situated on top of your kidneys). This causes the Flight/Fight/Freeze response.
Whether your stress is what we consider everyday stress or an actual dangerous event your body reacts in a similar manner
And we all feel stress ( well I know I do ) every day at some point
Excess levels of these hormones can then leave you feeling anxious and impact your body in various ways. This becomes a vicious cycle: your hormones increase anxiety, the anxiety causes more hormones to be released, and so on.
Postmenopause our adrenal glands continue to produce our sex hormones. This is a vital function. So we need our adrenal to be in tip-top shape to mind us hormonally into our old age.
