Holistic Hormonal Health for Endometriosis
Health – Always in the last place you look for it
I, like most people became interested in complimentary medicine out of necessity. Let’s be honest if you have a medical concern that is fixed after going to your doctor – well, then you really don’t need to keep searching!
So what happens if you’re not completely satisfied with the outcome, well you will probably put up with it for a while. It’s generally only when your condition is serious, extremely painful or life limiting that we keep searching.
The options are to keep searching within the conventional medical field, usually trekking from one specialist to another until you are happy with the outcome or you could (and I did) start to research some more holistic approaches . Yes health like most things is generally in the last place you look for it.
So what is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (endometrium), is found outside the uterus, where it induces a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in scar tissue. It is primarily found on the pelvic peritoneum, on the ovaries, in the recto-vaginal septum, on the bladder, and bowel.
According to the Endometriosis Association of Ireland, Endometriosis is estimated to affect between 2% and 10% of all women within the general population – that’s approximately 155,000 women in Ireland, 1.5 million women in the UK and 5 million women in the USA.
The Link with Infertility
There is also a link between Endometriosis and Infertility.
Approximately 30- 50% of women with infertility have endometriosis. However thankfully, up to 70% of women with endometriosis go on to have children.
Symptoms can begin prior to a girl’s first period, and for most women symptoms persist throughout their menstrual life. 70% of teenagers with pelvic pain go on to be diagnosed with endometriosis. In some cases symptoms persist following the menopause.
How can Homeopathic Treatment Help?
The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat the endometriosis symptoms but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility therefore improving the condition and the persons overall health.
Every woman with Endometriosis has their own story, their own constellation of symptoms, their own trigger factors, and their own way of coping with the condition.
In this kind of condition, the homeopathic approach really comes into its own, as it is an individual approach to health care.
There are approximately 3000 different homeopathic remedies available. If 10 women presented with endometriosis, they could all get prescribed any variation of these remedies. This is because the remedy is selected to match the individual features and factors displayed by the client.
The individual factors considered in a prescription include:
- The presenting complaint – when it started, what makes it better or worse; any other symptoms that might have started at the same time
- Any other symptoms that you have – not just the presenting complaint
- Medical history including family history
As homeopathy is an individualized medicine and Endometriosis is a long term and recurrent condition best results will be obtained when a homeopath is consulted.
Self-care is not advised for this condition but I have outlined some remedies that will help with some of the symptoms.
The best outcomes are obtained when the condition is not fully advanced, although as homeopathy treats the whole person and not just the condition, an improvement in overall health will be noticed after a programme of treatment regardless of its stage.
In the interim, however the following remedies could be used to help alleviate some of symptoms short term and to see if homeopathy as a system of medicine is suitable for you. Choose the remedy that best reflects your symptoms:
The Remedies
Sepia
This is a useful remedy for conditions brought about by hormonal changes in women. The remedy suits those who feel they are worn out and have a dragged-down feeling in the pelvic region.
You may feel disconnected from loved ones. You dislike sympathy and prefer to be alone and find that you crave acidic things and chocolate.
You feel better from vigorous exercise, eating, warmth, open air.
The complaint is worse during menstruation and if you miss a meal.
Pulsatilla
Periods can be late and painful
Pains are aching, dull and wandering.
The complaint is better for doubling up and worse before and during the period
The pain can cause the woman to cry out and bend double.
Rescue Remedy
Homeopathic preparation – used to cope with any form of emotional stress or anxiety.

MM Co. Meath – Endometriosis symptoms
After the birth of my twins in 2012, I found that my periods were extremely heavy and painful. They were very irregular and I dreaded them each month.
I attended my GP who believed I may have had endometriosis and sent me to a consultant Gyno in Mullingar. Upon seeing my symptoms he believed that the Gp’s concerns may be correct and advised me to have the coil inserted to remedy my issues.
I was not happy with using the coil without knowing for certain whether or not I actually had endometriosis. I insisted that it be confirmed before agreeing to any treatment. After a investigation it was found that I did not have endometriosis. The consultant offered no other suggestions as to what may be occurring and told me to return to my GP.
I decided to try Homeopathy as it has worked on me in the past as well as been effective for my children.
In a matter of a couple of months the pain and discomfort was gone completely and my cycle is now back to its normal rhythm.
I found Deirdre to be patient and understanding and was able to see the root of the issue. She was very clear in her instruction and made everything easy to follow.
I would recommend Deirdre to anyone who is struggling with hormonal/period issues. I was suffering and getting no help to rectify the issue though the conventional method.
NME Ireland – Heavy Periods/ PMT
“After having my last child my hormones did not appear to settle down. For almost 3 years I suffered with heavy periods, lasting up to 2 weeks and coming more frequently than every 28 days. They were not always regular ranging from 21 to 26 days. I suffered with symptoms of PMT including mood swings and painful breasts. My GP referred me to a gynaecologist who advised that I could take the pill or have a coil inserted. Neither were options for me as I could not face putting another hormone into my already hormonal stressed body.
I began researching alternatives, read up on the benefits of homeopathy and sought help from Deirdre.
From the very first consultation I knew that I was in good hands and she could help.
After taking a full history on myself and my family she started me on a remedy to be taken daily.
From the very next period I noticed an improvement, the PMT symptoms had almost disappeared and my period was lighter than before.
Over the following 2 months the improvements continued.
I am still attending regular consultations with Deirdre who has adjusted the remedy as required and provided some helpful life perspectives for a stressed Mom along the way.
I am looking forward to continuing working with Deirdre on balancing my hormones and would highly recommend her and homeopathy as a natural alternative.”
